Concord, NH – The stage is set for the start of the 114th playing of the New Hampshire Amateur Championship at Bretwood Golf Course.  132 players will be making a trip to Keene to determine the top amateur golfer in the Granite State and the New Hampshire Golf Association is eager to get the Championship started.  With the support of Audi of Nashua for the second year, this year’s tournament is sure to be memorable.
With the 2016 State Amateur Champion, Chris Houston, opting to turn professional this year, the door is wide open for a new champion.  Matt Paradis continues to find himself in contention in NHGA events, finishing runner-up in the 2016 State Amateur at Laconia Country Club, runner-up at the 2017 NHGA Player’s Invitational at Baker Hill and in the winner’s circle at the 2017 Four Ball Championship.  He is itching to earn the coveted State Amateur Champion title for his first time.
This year’s field includes eight players who have experience winning that 36-hole final match in the State Amateur Championship.  Connor Greenleaf (2015), Mike Martel (2013), Jim Cilley (2011), Matt Burroughs (2006), Danny Arvanitis (2001), Derek MacAllister (2004), Craig Steckowych (1990 & 1998), and Phil Pleat (1981, 1985, & 1997) will all be teeing it up at Bretwood beginning July 10th.
This year’s 132 player field includes nine Bretwood Golf Course members, with Mike Blair entering as the home course exemption.  Along with Bretwood, Manchester Country Club has nine members competing and Nashua Country Club has 11 members vying for Championship title.  Also in the field are six father-son duos, including Phil and James Pleat who recently competed in the 2017 U.S. Amateur Four Ball Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.
The family-owned Bretwood Golf Course boasts two 18-hole golf courses, the “North” and the “South” course.  This will be the first time in 17 years that the State Amateur will be held at Bretwood and the NHGA is thrilled to be returning.  The last time they hosted, in 2000, Bob Mielcarz earned his 9th and most recent State Amateur victory.  The Championship will be contested on the North course at Bretwood, which will play at around 6,700 yards for the stroke play qualifying rounds and closer to 6,900 yards for the match play rounds.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship sponsored by Audi of Nashua is a six-day event, beginning with 36 holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday, July 10th and Tuesday, July 11th to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday, July 12th.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday, July 13th and Friday, July 14th and the Championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday, July 15th.
