June 7th, 2017

Atkinson, NH – The sun and 70-degree weather made an appearance at today’s State Amateur qualifying round at Atkinson Resort and Country Club.  Thirteen players, all who shot 83 or better, will be advancing on to the State Amateur Championship being held at Bretwood Golf Course next month.  Tim Baines (Intervale Country Club) carded the low round of the day at just two-over par, 74.
Baines opened his round with a birdie but found some difficulty on the front nine as he went on to card bogeys on holes 4, 5, 6, and 9.  His back nine was certainly stronger; he shot a back nine total of 35, one-under par.  The excitement in his round came on the 523-yard, par 5 12th hole where he reached the green in two shots and drained his putt to make eagle.
Other low rounds came from AJ Correia (Laconia Country Club) with a 76 and Alec Brunelle (Atkinson Country Club) and Garret Olivar (Derryfield Country) each with a 78.
Atkinson was setup to about 6,300 and with all the rain this spring has seen, the course played a little longer and more difficult.  Competitors scores were wide ranging and local knowledge was needed to go low.
The 114th New Hampshire Amateur Championship will be contested at Bretwood Golf Course July 10-15.  The next qualifier will be at Keene Country Club on Tuesday, June 13th.
