Fox Goes Birdie Hunting in First Round of State Amateur

July 11th, 2016

Laconia, NH –  With the first day of the 113th New Hampshire State Amateur Championship, sponsored by Audi of Nashua, in the books, a few players truly stood out; one being Austin Fox of Legends Golf NH who shot a five-under par, 67.  He is closely followed by two at 69; Matt Paradis and Matt Burroughs.
For Fox, it was fairly simple. He says, “I kept the ball below the hole and didn’t give myself any downhill putts”.  On greens that are rolling like Laconia Country Club’s greens, it is always important to stay below the hole to give yourself a chance at birdie.
Going into tomorrow, Fox says the game plan is the same as today.  “I just need to keep it in the fairway and keep the ball below the hole.”  Just a simple, smart game is on his mind going into the next 18 holes to qualify for the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.
Along with the three mentioned, there were six additional players recording an under-par round.  Those players are Chris Houston (70), Jim Cilley (70), John DeVito (70), Ryan Tombs (70), James McKee (71), and Jabe Felch (71).  Defending State Amateur champion Connor Greenleaf finished the first round at even par, 72.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
