Laconia, NH –  With 64 players moving on to the Round of 64 after the stroke play qualifying rounds, it almost seemed unlikely that the two Choukas brothers, Phin and Nate, would end up facing each other in the first round of match play.  Phin earned the 31 seed and Nate landed himself the 34 seed, which brought the two together to face off in the first round of match play.  Nate, the older brother, edged out Phin and won 2 up to advance to the Round of 32.  Nate will face Jim Cilley, who defeated Charlie McNeeley 5 & 3, in the next round.
Laconia Country Club members made a great showing in the first round of matches at the State Amateur as five members are moving on to the Round of 32.  Justin Dockham defeated Peter Keilty in 20 holes, Chris Houston beat out James Kinnunen 5 & 4, AJ Correia took Michael Martel to 21 holes for the win, Bill Everett defeated Matt Levins 6 & 4, and Eric Foster earned a 1 up victory over Bryce Salo.  Home course advantage is certainly working out in their favor this week.
Number one seed, Ryan Tombs defeated Josh Chamberlain 4 & 2 and will face Matt Jensen of Ridgewood Country Club in the Round of 32 after Jensen beat Jeffrey Monahan 3 & 1.  Roger Larrivee, Manchester Country Club, took the State Amateur defending champion, Connor Greenleaf, to the 18th hole where Greenleaf ultimately won 1 up.  Ryan Kohler comfortably defeated Josh Johnson after being 5 up thru 9; Kohler won 6 & 5.  The Salo brothers, Cam and Damon, are also advancing to the Round of 32 as Damon won his match 3 & 2 and Cam won his match 2 up.
The Round of 32 and Round of 16 will be played on Thursday, with tee times for the Round of 32 beginning at 7AM.  There are many great matches to keep an eye on in the coming rounds at the 113th New Hampshire State Amateur Championship.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
