Local Knowledge Key at Shattuck State Amateur Qualifier

June 25th, 2017

Jaffrey, NH – Those golfers who entered the State Amateur Qualifier at The Shattuck with a little bit of local knowledge were able to earn one of the ten spots available for next month’s Championship proper at Bretwood Golf Course.  Scores of 85 and lower were good enough to advance and the low round of 73 came from Bryce Salo who calls The Shattuck his home course.
Many players had a certain number in their head that they thought would be good enough to advance, but came up shy due to many factors.  Seeing the course for the first time in the qualifying round proved detrimental to many as there are numerous holes that require hitting the ball in the right spot to make it out with par.
Salo’s round was the lowest by five strokes and his knowledge of the course worked to his advantage.  Playing the front nine at two-over par, he entered the back nine with a double bogey on the 10th but got back to even par for the back nine with two birdies.  Fellow Shattuck members James Kinnunen (84) and Mack Seppala (85) will be joining Salo at Bretwood in just a few short weeks.
The Shattuck was set to about 5,900 yards, but with much difficulty.  The narrow, par-5 5th hole played the toughest in this qualifying round.  The hole is tight with hazard on each side, so hitting the ball in the short grass was even more important there when trying to make it out with par.  Weather conditions could not have been better; sunny and 75 degrees with a light breeze was what all those attempting to qualify faced.
The 114th New Hampshire Amateur Championship will be contested at Bretwood Golf Course July 10-15.  The next qualifier will be at Mount Washington on Tuesday, June 27th.
