Keene, NH –  The penultimate day at the 114th State Amateur Championship presented by Audi of Nashua was a successful one.  Only two players are advancing on to the final match – number one seed Matt Paradis (Concord CC) and the number ten seed, Mike Martel (Nashua CC).  The two will square off in the 36-hole final match Saturday morning beginning at 7AM on Bretwood’s North Course.
Paradis defeated both Kurt Eddins (Cochecho CC) and Connor Greenleaf (Windham CC) on his way to the finals for the second year in a row.  In his Quarterfinal match, Eddins took an early lead on the first and fourth holes to get to 2UP but Paradis battled back and by the time they made the turn, the match returned to All Square.  From there, he took control and beat Eddins 4 & 2.  His Semifinal match with Greenleaf ended on the 17th but the match went back and forth for a bit on the front nine.  A few early back nine mistakes from Greenleaf led to Paradis getting to 2UP and eventually 3UP.  Paradis lost the 15th hole but finally sealed the deal on 17.
Speaking with Paradis about how it feels being matched up against past State Amateur Champions (Greenleaf 2015 and Martel 2013) he says, “You know they’re not really going to mess up, you’ve got to make some birdies against Connor to win some holes.”
“There’s a ton of great players in the field, Mike is another one.  We’re pretty good friends, he hits the ball a long way, so I’m going to be expecting to hit the ball first tomorrow and hopefully stick some shots pretty close and put some pressure on him”, continues Paradis.
Paradis will look to use his experience from last year’s State Amateur final match to propel him to his first State Amateur title.
Martel’s journey to the final match included John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) and Brett Wilson (The Golf Club of New England).  Martel got to 4UP in his Quarterfinal match with DeVito thru 8 holes, but DeVito wasn’t going down without a fight.  DeVito made a few birdies that were unanswered by Martel to bring the match back to Martel at 1UP.  Martel hung onto that all the way through the 18th to win.  Later in the day he made a steady climb in the Semifinal match against Brett Wilson and never let up.  He defeated Wilson 4 & 3 to advance on to the final match.
Preparing to face the number one seed, Martel states, “I’m going to try to bring my best which I’ve tried to bring all week.”
“It’s going to be a heck of a match”, continues Martel.  Martel has experience winning the 36-hole final match as he was successful at The Golf Club of New England in 2013.
The final match is set to take place Saturday morning beginning at 7AM.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
