Keene, NH –  After a three and a half hour weather delay, the Round of 16 of the 114th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi of Nashua got underway and turned out to be an exciting round.  Four of the eight matches played all 18 holes on Bretwood’s North Course, while two others didn’t see the last four holes.  Eight players are advancing on to the Quarterfinals.
Both medalists are continuing their journey through match play.  Matt Paradis (Concord CC) faced off with Phil Pleat (Nashua CC) in a back and forth match that needed 18 holes to determine the winner.  Paradis got himself to 2UP after the 15th hole and gave one up on the 590 yard, 17th hole.  Pleat needed to drain a putt on the 18th green to advance the match but just missed.  As for John DeVito (Passaconaway CC), one of the few players who hasn’t seen the 18th hole in match play, he defeated Will McLaughlin (Concord CC) 5 & 4.
The other competitor who won his match 5 & 4 was Mike Martel (Nashua CC) who beat Ryan Friel (The Overlook).  Poor play was not a factor in this match; Friel was right around even par but Martel was at five under par with stellar play.
Martel comments after his match saying, “I got off to a good start.  With a birdie at 4 and a birdie at 5 I was up 4 thru 5 and from there on I just played some solid, smart golf to make him have to beat me.”
In the quarterfinals, Martel will face DeVito.  When asked what he is thinking about that match he stated, “I’m expecting John’s best.  I’m going to have to play at the top of my game to get through that match.”
While the Martel/Friel match ended early, the James Pleat (Nashua CC)/ Jamie Ferullo (Rochester CC) match heated up fast.  For much of the day, the match was All Square until Ferullo rolled in a putt on the 16th hole to go 1UP and put the pressure on James.  Coming down the 18th hole, James needed a birdie but just missed his putt to lose the match.
Ferullo, who knew it would be a tough match from the beginning said, “James is a phenomenal player; I knew I had a really tall task ahead of me today.  To beat James is a real accomplishment for me.”
Also advancing on to the Quarterfinal matches are Kurt Eddins, Ryan Tombs, Connor Greenleaf and Brett Wilson.  Greenleaf won his match after being 2 holes down with three to play and chipping in on the 16th and 18th holes to ultimately win the match.
The Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches will take play on Friday, with the Quarterfinals set to tee off at 7AM.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
