WOLFEBORO, NEW HAMPSHIRE-Phil Pleat of Nashua Country Club, who is in search of his unprecedented fourth consecutive win in the New Hampshire Senior Championship, is in the lead after playing the first round at Kingswood Golf Club. But he has company.

Pleat got around the 6,184 yard Donald Ross designed layout in even par 72 and is joined at that figure by Mike Blair of Bretwood Golf Club, Bill Everett of Owl's Nest Golf Club and Richard Peak from Farmington Country Club.

Playing his normal steady golf Pleat bogeyed his first hole and birdied the first hole of the back nine but made par on the other 16 holes. Blair's round was a bit more dramatic with a birdie at the second hole and an eagle on the par 5-10th hole but he gave those back with bogeys at the 3rd, 14th and 16th.

Everett tied for the most birdies (four) but needed them with a double bogey at the second and bogeys at the 8th and 12th. Peak also made four birdies to go with his four bogeys.

A group of five players finished two shots back of the leaders that includes Dan Arvanitis, David Howell, John Macinness, John Bottomley and Craig Steckowych.

A shot further back is former champion Bob Mielcarz and along with Bo Harris who finished at 3 over par.

There are four players at four over and another seven at six over par so Pleat has plenty of players breathing down his neck if he wants to complete his four-peat.

The final round kicks off at 7:30 am on Wednesday with the leaders teeing it up at 11:00.
