32 Advancing: Top Seeds Remain in State Amateur Presented by Audi Nashua

July 10th, 2019

Greenland, NH – As the Round of 64 of the 116th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi Nashua comes to a close at Portsmouth Country Club, many of the top seeds still remain, while others fell to their opponents in the first round of matches.  Ryan Brown (Manchester CC), the top seed, advanced on after closing out his match with Derek LeClair (Nashua CC) 7 & 5.

A notable player that is advancing on to the Round of 32 is Fletcher Sokul (Concord CC) who went up against Rick Moreau (Sky Meadow CC) in this first batch of matches and won 5 & 4.  Following the match, Sokul comments saying, “I got off to a hot start, I won the first two holes.”

From there, he states, “I won 8, 9 and 10 which kind of gave me enough room to make some steady pars and close out the match.”

Sokul and Moreau happened to be paired together in the two stroke play qualifying rounds that led to match play.  Having played 36 holes together already this week, Sokul says, “I knew what he did well coming in.  I had a little bit of an advantage off the tee in terms of length so I knew as long as I was able to put the ball in play, especially with these firms greens, and put it in the fairway I was going to have some short irons in and give myself some good looks at birdie.”

In the transition from stroke play to match play, Sokul’s game plan remained about the same.  He said, “Today was more about putting the ball in play, very similar to stroke play and trying to give myself a few good looks at birdie.  Tomorrow, I think I’m going to have to be a little bit more aggressive.  I’ve been kind of holding back and I know the further you get into this tournament you need to make a few more birdies to keep advancing.”

With his win, Sokul moves on to face Tommy Ethier (Nashua CC) in the Round of 32.  Ethier defeated Bill Moran (Atkinson Resort & CC) 2 & 1.  The match between Sokul and Ethier should be an interesting one as Ethier advanced as far as the Semifinal match in last year’s New Hampshire Amateur, while Sokul advanced to the Quarterfinal match.

The second seed of the tournament, Brandon Gillis (Green Meadow GC) was given a run in his first match by Phil Smith (Green Meadow GC) as the two needed one extra hole to decide the match.  Similarly, Kevin Strong (Rochester CC) and Brian Adams (Breakfast Hill GC) went into extra holes with Adams ultimately coming out with the win in 20 holes.  Adams, who is only 14 years old, showed confidence in his match to come out with the victory.  Taking it one step further, the Harvin Groft (The Oaks GL) and Matt Gover (Atkinson Resort & CC) match went into extra holes, with those two needing a total of 21 holes to determine a winner.  Gover came out on top.  Gillis moves on to face Ryan Kohler (Hooper GC) and Adams and Gover will face eachother in the Round of 32.

Thursday, July 11 will include the Round of 32 and the Round of 16, beginning at 7:30AM.

The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
