39 Advance to New Hampshire Amateur Presented by Audi Nashua Following First Day of Qualifying

June 22nd, 2020

Rochester, NH – In a busy day for amateur golf in the Granite State, 39 golfers are advancing on to the 117th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi Nashua, to be held at Nashua Country Club July 6-11.  The first two qualifying rounds of six were held at Rochester Country Club and Montcalm Golf Club, where strong fields of competitors were looking to earn their spot in the state’s premier amateur golf championship.  The cut line at both sites was 8-over par, 80 with William Huang (Golf Club of New England) earning medalist honors at Rochester and Bill Everett (Laconia CC) taking medalist at Montcalm.

It was an exciting day at Rochester Country Club where low rounds were recorded, but none lower than that of William Huang who tied the course record with a 63 (-9).  The course record was set by Mike Martel back in 2017 in the third round of the New Hampshire Stroke Play Championship.

Today, Huang came out firing going six-under par on the front nine, which included an eagle on the second hole and four other birdies.  At the turn, he knew he was the lowest to that point and wanted to keep it going on the more challenging back nine of Rochester.  Although he carded one bogey on the 14th hole, he did have four birdies on the back side, including one on the 18th hole after sticking it close and making the putt, with an audience watching.

Huang commented after the round saying, “I’ve been hitting the ball real solid off the tee and my irons have always been a strength.  Once I can get the ball in the fairway and in play off the tee, I’ve been hitting it real solid.”

“I happened to roll the putter pretty well today.  I had a couple missed putts but I’m not really going to complain about it,” continues Huang.

This will be the first time competing in the New Hampshire Amateur for Huang.  The Stanford University commit has been very active in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) over the past few years and currently ranks 41st among all boys in the AJGA.  Huang looks forward to competing at Nashua CC and says, “I’m just excited to have the opportunity to play this great event.”

19 additional golfers who shot 80 or better are moving on to Nashua Country Club from the Rochester CC Qualifier.  A playoff of three golfers for the final two spots was needed to determine who would move forward with Justin Fogarty and Cody Stevens grabbing the final spots.

Similar to Rochester Country Club, the cutline at the Montcalm GC Qualifier was at 80 (+8) with 19 golfers moving to the championship proper.  Bill Everett blew the field away with a bogey-free 67 (-5) to grab medalist honors at Montcalm Golf Club.  Close behind was Alex Gambordella (Windham CC) who shot a three-under par 69 to finish two shots behind Everett.

Everett is coming off of a strong showing in the New Hampshire Club Team Championship at Derryfield CC where he carded a 68 (-2) on his own ball.  He carried that over to Montcalm GC for his qualifying round where he went three-under on the front and two-under on the back for an impressive 67.

At the end of the day at Montcalm, it came down to six golfers for the final qualifying spot.  The golfers that shot 80 (+6) headed into a five-hole playoff with Ricky Bergevin (Pembroke Pines CC) coming out on top and earning his spot into the 156-player field of the 117th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi Nashua.

Qualifying rounds continue on Wednesday, June 24th at North Conway CC and Keene CC.
