Hanover, NH – The 18th hole of Hanover Country Club saw many matches during the Round of 32 and Round of 16 of the New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi of Nashua.  Ultimately, the top seeds are advancing including Pat Pelletier (Carter CC), Matt Paradis (Concord CC), Ryan Tombs (Manchester CC), Brandon Gillis (Souhegan Woods GC) and Ryan Brown (Manchester CC) – the top five seeds.
Pelletier (1) had two close matches, one ending on the 18th hole and the second finishing up on the 16th.  Pelletier is now up against the 2015 New Hampshire Amateur Champion, Connor Greenleaf (Windham CC), who battled his way back in the Round of 16 and defeated Jack Brown (Nashua CC) in 19 holes.
The real drama was around the Tombs/ Jim Cilley (Ridgewood CC) match in the Round of 16 where they needed two extra holes to determine the winner.  Cilley started the match with two quick birdies to get to 2up over Tombs.  By the time they crossed the bridge to the 6th hole, Cilley had a 4up lead but Tombs started fighting back as he won the 7th and 8th holes.  The two traded birdies on the back nine, but Tombs slowly started making his way back to All Square.
Cilley won the 17th hole forcing Tombs to need a birdie or better to advance the match.  Tombs made birdie while Cilley settled for par and the two advanced on to extra holes.  Both making par on the 1st hole, it came down to putting on their 20th hole; Tombs drained his putt but Cilley couldn’t match it.
Tombs had a makeable putt on both playoff holes but only made one of them.  He commented after the match, saying “On the first hole I was a little shaky over it, I should have backed off of it.  But on two, I made sure I was comfortable before I walked up to it – I wasn’t leaving that one short.”
Earlier in the day, Tombs closed out his match with John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) on the 14th hole as one of the earlier finishing matches of the day.  Looking ahead to the quarterfinals, Tombs will take on Tommy Ethier (Nashua CC) who defeated Jamie Ferullo (Rochester CC) earlier in the day and then took down Sam Barton (Kingswood CC) in the Round of 16.
The quarterfinal matchups are sure to bring more drama as Brandon Gillis is set to square off with Ryan Brown.  Gillis found himself needing the 18th to determine both of his matches today but he ended up beating Ryan Thorpe (The Golf Club of New England) and MacGregor Thompson (Breakfast Hill GC) 1up.
The quarterfinals and semifinal matches are scheduled for Thursday, July 12th.
