Concord, NH – Through consistent improvement across the three days of the New Hampshire Women’s Amateur Championship held at Concord Country Club, Julianna Megan has earned her way to a victory. Megan outplayed her opponent, June Doerr (Abenaqui CC) in a two-hole playoff to be crowned this year’s champion, following her final round 73 (+3) that put her at 18-over par for the championship.

Coming into the final round, Megan was four shots back of the leader, Amy Dickison (Breakfast Hill GC), so she certainly had some ground to make up along the way. Luckily for Megan, some of the leaders fell back a few shots early on in the round and it became clear that it was going to be a race between Megan and Doerr at the end.

“I was really trying to not focus on score and take each shot and play each shot as it was”, stated Megan about her mindset coming into the final round. “I knew that if I got too ahead of myself, I was going to be a mess.”

She started her round strong making birdie on the first hole at Concord Country Club. Although she followed that up with two-straight bogeys, she was able to par her way through the remainder of the front nine. The back nine seemed to be where many golfers struggled a little, but Megan was holding it together; she bogeyed the 11th hole but turned around to make birdie on 12 to even that out. Although she did make two more bogeys on the back nine, she was also making some key putts where she needed them, including on the 15th hole making an important par save to stay in it.

“Around 15, I accidentally looked at the leaderboard and saw my name at the top and I got a little nervous”, commented Megan about knowing where she stood in relation to the field. “I guess knowing I was up there made me focus a little more.”

Megan finished out her round with two key pars, which are tough to do with a large audience watching. She posted her best round of the week and best round of the day among all competitors with a 73 (+3). From there, she watched as Doerr came in and posted a 74 (+4) for both players to end up tied at +18 for the tournament to enter into a playoff to determine the champion.

With a mental reset, both headed to the 17th hole at Concord Country Club to play their first playoff hole. Impressively, both rolled in birdie putts on 17, Megan making birdie first to put the pressure on Doerr. Doerr responded to the challenge by confidently rolling in her birdie putt to move on to 18 for another playoff hole.

Both players had a similar line for that birdie putt, but Megan had about double the distance Doerr had to make her putt. Telling herself to just put it close, Megan stated, “I have a tendency to miss them short, I said that if you have a chance to make it, don’t leave it short, especially because a lot of mine were tracking today I just would have the speed wrong.”

Coming down 18, both players perfectly placed their tee shots in the middle of the fairway with a good look at the green. Their approach shots were also similar, hitting it to the back left of the green with a back right hole location for the day. Doerr was first to putt, putting a good roll on it but leaving it short with some work left to do. Megan was able to cozy her putt up close for a tap-in par, again putting the pressure on Doerr. This time, though, Doerr just missed her putt and Megan earned her New Hampshire Women’s Amateur Championship title.

The previous week, Megan watched as Doerr was crowned the New Hampshire Girls Junior Champion. This week is a different story as Megan was able to hold strong for the win and play some of her best golf yet to earn her title.

This is Megan’s first New Hampshire Women’s Amateur victory, claiming it as a 17-year-old about to enter her senior year of high school at Pinkerton Academy. Megan commented on how it feels to win saying, “It feels amazing, I still don’t think it’s real.”

The New Hampshire Golf Association would like to extend a sincere thank you to the entire Concord Country Club staff, including Maintenance, Pro Shop and Food and Beverage staff for their hospitality throughout the week. The course was in impeccable condition and was a true test for the top female golfers in the Granite State.
