Champions Crowned at Mike Ryan Memorial

July 21st, 2021

Derryfield, NH- With the storms kept at bay, the final matches of the Mike Ryan Memorial Championship got under way today.

Kicking off the morning, was the Elite Girls Division final match where Julianna Megan (Hoodkroft CC) was crowned Champion. She defeated Delaney Nadeau (CandiaOaks) 7&6.

Megan got off to a strong start and was able to keep her lead over Nadeau throughout the entire match. “I was able to finally swing really well, and I got off the tee really well,” stated Megan looking back on the match.

Julianna credits most of her round to her putting today saying, “I found a lot of consistency today but the putting is what saved me. I was short on a couple of the holes so being able to get up and down really helped.” She used her putting and consistency to continue to gain holes over Nadeau as the match progressed until she was able to claim the title.

Megan is no stranger to this tournament. Being a player in the event for the past couple years, she was able to participate in an all-girls division, where this event has historically had co-ed divisions. “It is really cool to win, and I really loved playing with the girls here,” stated Megan after the match.

In the Elite Boys Division, four players set out to win the semi-final match this morning to make it to the finals. Connor Allard (Portsmouth CC) and Evan Rollins (Laconia CC) were able to defeat their opponents this morning to send them to the final match this afternoon.

Allard was able to take the Elite Boys Division Title 2&1 over Rollins. “I had a really good match all the way through, and Evan is a great competitor. He made pars all day,” stated Allard after the match.

“I just made a couple of early birdies and two on the back to get myself three up at one point. I stumbled a little bit on two of the holes, but then came back on 17 with a really good birdie to win it,” continued Allard. Connor was able to card four birdies in total, while Rollins had a round of straight pars.

Connor is just coming off of playing at the New Hampshire Amateur last week up at North Conway, where he made it to match play. “I think playing in the state am last week in the match play was really helpful for this just because you know what to expect and how to strategize,” said Allard.

The Elite Boys first and second flights had their finals this morning as well. Jack Poitras (Golf Club of New England) was able to take the first flight title beating out Drew Cameron (Derryfield CC) 4&2. In the second flight, it came down to the 18th hole where Kody Dexter (Pembroke Pines CC) was able to roll one in to beat Jascha Johnston (Youth on Course) to take the flight title.

The Prep Boys Division also had to muscle through a semi final match this morning to make it to the finals this afternoon. After some close matches, Jim Schouller (Abenaqui CC) and Carl Sirrianna (Pembroke Pines CC) were able to earn their spots into the finals.

Carl Sirrianna took the Champion title in the final match 1up. The match was extremely close the entire run with both Sirrianna and Schouller taking turns sinking putts and winning holes. Heading into the 16th hole, the match was tied. Sirrianna managed a bogey to win the 17th hole and the match was headed to 18. Once the players got up to the green, Schouller missed a putt to take the matches to extra holes, and Sirrianna was able to take the Prep Boys Division Champion title.

The Mike Ryan Memorial Championship was formally known as the Red Ryan Tournament. The NHGA Junior Tour made the decision in 2019 to name the tournament after Mike Ryan, who dedicated his life to the growth of junior golf around New Hampshire. This tournament will honor his name and his legacy at Derryfield Country Club. The Mike Ryan Memorial Championship is a three-day tournament with the first round being 18 holes of qualifying stroke play, with two days of match play to follow.
