Cilley/Mahan Sides Fires Low Round to Lead Gross Four Ball

June 9th, 2018

Hudson, NH –   Following the opening round of the Gross Four Ball Championship held at Green Meadow Golf Club, the team of Jim Cilley (Ridgewood CC) and Michael Mahan (Cochecho CC) lead the way with a 64 (-8).  On their heels is the side of James Pleat (Nashua CC)/ John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) with a score of 66 (-6).
Jim Cilley and Michael Mahan are familiar with the feeling of winning the Four Ball Championship as they accomplished this task in 2010.  Cilley, a seasoned veteran in the world of New Hampshire amateur golf, managed a 65 on his own, with a 31 on his opening nine holes and going bogey-free all 18 holes.  Mahan contributed in his own right, playing a solid round with a key birdie on the 10th hole to keep their low score going.
“I had a pretty hot putter today”, says Cilley.  “It was just one of those days where if I looked at it, it went in.”  That is exactly what happened for Cilley, posting seven birdies including one on the final hole of the day.  With a 65, Cilley tied the NHGA tournament record at Green Meadow Golf Club.
Having been in this position before heading into the final round, Mahan says, “We have to stay aggressive and play within our game.  We just have to do what we do and not concern ourselves with anyone else and we should be fine.”
With a two-shot lead heading into the final round being held at Owl’s Nest Resort Golf Club, Cilley and Mahan will look to fend off the Pleat/DeVito team along with the Sherborne/Tombs team who sits just three shots back of the lead.  They also can’t count out the team of Brandon Gillis (Green Meadow GC) and Jack Brown (Nashua CC); both young players and strong competitors who fired a 67 (-5).  Owl’s Nest has many different features than Green Meadow and competitors will have to navigate the elevation changes, among many other differences.
The Gross Four Ball Championship is two-day, 36-hole best ball championship.  Teams of two take to Green Meadow Golf Club and Owl’s Nest Resort and Golf Club to determine the top four ball team in the state.
