Cormier & Timmer Hold Off Round One Leaders in Playoff to Earn the Junior Team Title

June 22nd, 2021

Francestown, NH – In a dramatic finish with rain pouring down, Mitchell Cormier and Sam Timmer have earned the title of Junior Team champions after defeating Sam Maurice and Jeremy Burke in a one-hole playoff at Crotched Mountain Golf Club.  Cormier and Timmer played their final round at even-par, 72 to head into a playoff and only needed one hole to take the win.
Throughout the tournament, Cormier and Timmer proved they are good partners for each other in this format as they went back and forth both rounds, helping each other out.  Their final round 71 (E) is a testament to how well they each contributed to their victory.
“We knew going into the tournament that we would have to shoot really well”, stated Cormier following their win.  They did just that.  In the final round alone, Cormier contributed three birdies and one eagle, while Timmer played a consistent game with a birdie and the necessary pars along the way to keep their momentum going.
Maurice and Burke were not going down without a fight.  At the turn in the final round, both teams were tied for the lead but Cormier and Timmer went on to double bogey the 10th to set themselves back two shots.  By the 14th hole, Cormier and Timmer were four shots back, but kept their composure to bring it down to the 18th hole, needing a birdie to tie.
Timmer stated, “We had two putts at it.  The way we played on the last four holes, we were confident one would go in, and we tried to stay focused.”  Fortunately for them, Cormier rolled in his birdie putt to force a playoff with Maurice and Burke.  It took just one hole with Cormier and Timmer coming out on top, edging out the strong play Maurice and Burke showed throughout the tournament.
Coming into the round, while nerves may have been high, the two set their game plan and did their best to stick to it.  Timmer said, “The mentality was ‘play your game’ and if they beat you at your own game, then hats off to them.  But we played really well.”
Last year, Cormier and Timmer teamed up in this same tournament, finishing in 4th place.  They have now climbed to the top and have earned their first victory together as a team.
The NHGA would like to thank Crotched Mountain Golf Club for hosting this tournament!
