Defending Champs Atop Leaderboard Following Opening Round of NHGA Women's Team Championship

June 26th, 2019

Carroll, NH –  With the rain from the previous day out of the way and the sun shining up at the beautiful Omni Mount Washington Resort, round one of the NHGA Women’s Team Championship commenced.  Leading the way following the opening round are defending champions, Chelsea Sedlar and Kate Billings who finished up at two-over par, 74.  Close on their heels are last year’s second place finishing team, Amy Peters and Betsy Knights, who shot three-over par, 75.

Sedlar and Billings needed nine holes before finding their first birdie of the day on the par-4, 9th hole.  Prior to that, the duo carded three uncharacteristic bogeys, including ones on the 1st, 5th, 6th and 8th holes of the scenic Mount Washington course.

“It took us a long time to settle down this morning and find our groove, but finally on the 9th hole I was able to roll in a birdie putt to give us some hope for the back nine”, comments Sedlar.

Sedlar went on to birdie the par-5, 10th hole after putting her second shot greenside, chipping it up close and making the short putt.  From there, the two consistently made pars all the way in to finish at two-over par, just one shot ahead of the Peters/Knights team.  They will look to defend their title in the final round of play at Mount Washington.

Sedlar talks about the first round and looks ahead to the final round saying, “Both of us haven’t played much golf yet this season, so we had a slower start to the round today.  But we had a solid back nine which gives us some momentum for tomorrow and hopefully we can pick up where we left off and avoid some of the bogeys on the front nine.”

Amy Peters and Betsy Knights, currently in second place, are looking to give Sedlar and Billings a run in the final round of the Women’s Team Championship.  Despite being four-over par on their front nine, they did have a strong back nine at one-under par, similar to the back nine of the Sedlar/Billings team.  Two highlights in their round were from Peters who birdied both the 12th and 14th holes of the course, giving them some momentum to finish out their round strong.  Peters and Knights will be paired up again with Sedlar and Billings in the final round.

On the Net side of the competition, Margaret McCabe and Lorie Ruland are at the top of the leaderboard with a net 10-under par, 62.  The two certainly took advantage of a few holes out there, including a birdie (net eagle) on the par-4, 12th hole.  As a team, they worked well together, going back and forth multiple times with each player contributing to their net total.

The Omni Mount Washington Resort course was a fair, but challenging test for the twelve teams that descended upon the course for the NHGA Women’s Team Championship.  Playing at around 5,300 yards with scenic views on every hole, players needed to navigate undulating greens and place their tee shots well to be able to put up low scores.  The final round of the championship will conclude on Thursday, June 27.
