Windham, NH – As the match play rounds of the 2019 Senior & Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship got underway, the top seeds continued to dominate play winning by impressive margins.  Ryan Kohler (Hooper GC) and Harvin Groft (The Oaks GL) had stellar performances in both the Round of 16 and Semifinal rounds of the Mid-Amateur bracket.  Meanwhile, Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC), the top seed of the Senior Division, controlled both his matches to win with ease.
Winning both of his matches 5 & 4, Ryan Kohler bested Jimmy Lyndes and Robert Geverd to maintain his position as the top seed in the championship and advance on to the Semifinal round.  In an even more impressive fashion, Harvin Groft didn’t reach the 14th hole of the golf course in either match as he defeated Joel Silverwatch 7 & 5 and went on to beat Christopher Hadley 8 & 7 in the Quarterfinals.  Kohler will go up against Josh Chamberlain (Stonebridge CC) and Groft will face Matt Walsh (Granite Fields GC) in the Semifinal round.
From the Senior side of the competition, Craig Steckowych cruised through his matches defeating Peter Stopera 7 & 6 and 2016 Senior Match Play Champion, Peter Beaulieu 5 & 4 in the Quarterfinal match.  Steckowych is on a run to defend his title; he beat New Hampshire Golf Hall of Fame Inductee, Bob Mielcarz in 2018 to take the Senior Match Play title.  David Kane (Derryfield CC), the number 15 seed of the Senior Division, is still going and moving on to the Semifinal round after beating Mike Blair and Bill Sheridan on Day 2 of the championship.  Steckowych will go up against Tony Fournier (Portsmouth CC) and Kane will face Bob Landry (Loudon CC) in the Semifinals.
Meanwhile in the Senior First Flight, Peter Mullet (Windham CC) has found himself in the final match against Bill Krueger (Concord CC).  While Krueger had a bye in the Quarterfinal round, he took down Bob Kalinowski (Cochecho CC) to make his way in to the final match of his flight.  Mullet bested Peter Ohanian in the first match of the day 6 & 5 but was given a run in the Semifinal match of his flight when Alan Nutter took him to 19 holes to decide the winner.
All Flights will conclude their matches on Wednesday with the Championship Flight Semifinal rounds in the morning and final match in the afternoon.  The Senior First Flight Final match will take place in the morning.
The Mid-Amateur and Senior Match Play Championships is in its fourth year on the NHGA championship schedule.  Competitors ages 25 and over compete in the Mid-Amateur division and competitors 55 and over compete in the Senior division.  All competitors play 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine their seed and flight for the match play rounds beginning Tuesday.  The top 16 players from each division are placed into the Championship Flight.
