Ferullo Earns His Victory at Players Invitational

June 3rd, 2018

Newbury, NH –  In a back-and-forth battle against some of the top amateur golfers in the Granite State, Jamie Ferullo (Rochester CC) earned his first individual NHGA victory in the 2018 Players Invitational held at Baker Hill Golf Club with an even par total, 144.  Bill Everett (Laconia CC) ultimately dominated the Senior division of the championship by shooting a pair of 74’s to win by a seven-stroke margin; this is Everett’s second NHGA title.

Ferullo started the second round of the tournament three strokes back of the first-round leader, Ryan Kohler (Hooper GC).  Making an early charge up the leaderboard, he made three birdies in the first five holes putting him at the top of the leaderboard alongside Kohler and Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC).  Despite a few three-putts in the round, Ferullo held onto the lead until the end of the round when Steckowych worked his way back after a few bogeys.

The turning point seemed to be the par-5, 15th hole where Ferullo’s tee shot landed in the rough with the ball above his feet, a tough lie.  He proceeded to stick his second shot to five feet from the hole and drained the putt for eagle while Matt Paradis (Concord CC) also made eagle and Steckowych settled for birdie.  From there, it was a battle between Steckowych and Ferullo; Ferullo ultimately winning the tournament on the 18th after a tough closing-hole bogey from Steckowych.

With Steckowych on his heels on the back nine, making four birdies in five holes to start a run, Ferullo stated, “It made me focus a little more.  I know someone like [Steckowych] has won a lot of events over the years and is somebody I’ve looked up to, so to be battling it out with him I knew he wasn’t going to go down without a fight.  He made some great putts and really put a lot of pressure on me to hit some good shots coming in.”

As this is Ferullo’s first individual NHGA championship win, he talks about his game and mindset saying, “I’m getting more confidence in my game.  I realize that I can come out here and play with a lot of these guys.  There’s a lot of good players in the field that have won a lot of NHGA events and I was happy to get it done at such a great golf course like this.”

With the Senior Division being dominated by Bill Everett following the opening round, it was going to take an extraordinary round for someone to catch him in the final round.  Everett played a steady round the entire way around Baker Hill, but then redeemed himself from his closing holes in the first round by finishing on a high note with two birdies.  Another 74 (+2) sealed the deal for Everett whose competition couldn’t match his level of play this weekend.  Everett earned his second NHGA title in two years with this win at the Player’s Invitational, which he won specially for Tom DiFonzo, Lanconia CC superintendent.
