Finalists of Senior & Mid-Amateur Match Play Determined

August 9th, 2021

New London, NH – The Senior and Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship continued at Lake Sunapee Country Club where the finalists in the Championship flight of each division emerged.  On the Senior side, it will be a rematch between Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC) and Bill Everett (Laconia CC) who each won their Semifinal match against tough opponents.  The Mid-Amateur division will have a final match of Phil Moore (Canterbury Woods CC) against Richard Dichard (Souhegan Woods CC); neither player has been to the finals of this tournament before.
In the Semifinals, Steckowych went up against fellow Portsmouth Country Club member, Tony Fournier.  Fournier already has a win under his belt this season having captured the Players Invitational win in the Senior Division back in June.  Fournier had a tough opponent to get through though as Steckowych has won the last three Senior Match Play Championship titles.
Steckowych ended up defeating Fournier on the 14th hole of their match, winning 5&4 to advance to the final match once again.  He will now go up against Bill Everett who also has a win in this tournament, claiming the title back in 2017 before Steckowych won three-straight.  Everett’s semifinal matchup was against Bob Mielcarz (Concord CC), nine-time State Amateur champion who knows how to work his way through match play.  Everett ultimately came out with the win, 3&2.  The rematch between Steckowych and Everett will be a good one to keep an eye on as Steckowych only defeated Everett 1up in last year’s final match.
For the Mid-Amateur players, two golfers who have not been in the finals of this tournament will square off against eachother.  Phil Moore claimed a spot in the final match with a win over Derek Dinwoodie (Farmington CC), 2&1.  It was a close match for much of the round, but top-seeded Moore edged out Dinwoodie on the 17th hole at Lake Sunapee to advance.
Moore will now face Richard Dichard in the finals of the Mid-Amateur division who took down Zach Melcher (Hanover CC Online) in the semfinals.  Coming into their semifinal matchup, both Dichard and Melcher had close matches, both players using all 18 holes in each that they played to determine the winner, so it was bound to be a close matchup from the start.  While Dichard was actually down by one thru 15 holes, he fought his way back and won the match on the 18th hole, 1up over Melcher.
The final match of each division will head to the Golf Club of New England on September 22nd.
