Fournier Finds Stride: Leads NH Senior Following Round One

September 10th, 2019

Dover, NH –  As the opening round of the New Hampshire Senior Championship presented by Pilothouse Wealth Advisors being held at Cochecho Country Club comes to a close, there is a new face atop the leaderboard.  Tony Fournier (Portsmouth CC) has the lead with the only under-par round of the day, one-under par, 69.  Three strokes behind him are both Phil Pleat (Nashua CC) who has six New Hampshire Senior titles under his belt and Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC) who has two NHGA titles already this season.
Fournier, a seacoast area golfer, began the day on the back nine at Cochecho CC, a course he has played many times.  He went two-over par on the course’s back nine, something most players in the field had done similarly.  Heading to the front nine, Fournier started to figure out what he needed to do and began making some birdies.
After the round, Fournier commented on the difference between his first and second nine, saying “I was hitting the wedges in close and I was rolling the ball to the hole and the putts went in, so it’s always good when you have confidence on the speed of the greens.”
He birdied the first, seventh and eighth holes of the course, without a blemish, to finish the front nine at three-under par and the round at one-under par.  He heads into the final round with a three-stroke lead.
To maintain his momentum and the lead, he says, “I have to get off the tee straight like today.  You make a miss here and it could result in a big number.  And just continue rolling the ball on the greens and putting well.”
Only three shots back, Pleat has his eyes on Fournier heading to the final round.  With six New Hampshire Senior titles and a total of 20 NHGA titles to his name, he certainly has the experience and ability to catch Fournier in the final round.  Pleat is set to be inducted into the New Hampshire Golf Hall of Fame next month.
Steckowych also sits just three shots back and is fresh off his win at the New Hampshire Senior Four-Ball Championship with partner Scott Peters.  Last week’s win was the second win just this season for Steckowych as he also claimed the New Hampshire Senior Match Play Championship title earlier in the season.  He too is a seacoast golf who has spent plenty of time on this golf course, even claiming their Club Championship title multiple times.
Another notable name to keep an eye on in the field this week is Bob Kearney (The Shattuck GC).  Kearney recently returned from a trip to the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship that was held in North Carolina last month where he advanced to the Round of 32, among some of the best senior amateur golfers from around the country.  He has even won the Texas Amateur Championship twice.  In today’s first round, Kearney shot four-over par, 74 and is five shots back of Fournier.
The New Hampshire Senior Championship is a 36-hole individual stroke play championship open to male golfers in New Hampshire age 55 and over, with a pre-senior division open to golfers ages 45-54.  Being held this year at the par-70, 6,200-yard Cochecho Country Club, the tournament first began in 1972; this is the first time Cochecho CC has hosted this particular NHGA championship.
