Fournier Finishes the Job to Capture His First NHGA Title

September 11th, 2019

Dover, NH –  With it coming down to the final hole to solidify his victory, Tony Fournier held onto the lead to win the 2019 New Hampshire Senior Championship presented by Pilothouse Wealth Advisors, his first New Hampshire Golf Association title.  Fournier went two-over par 72 in the final round to finish the 36-hole tournament being held at Cochecho Country Club at just one-over par.
“I got off to a good start, I started parring the golf course and that was holding off my opponents”, states Fournier following his win.  He had some strong competitors chasing him down in the final round including Phil Pleat, Craig Steckowych, Danny Arvanitis and Mike Blair, to name a few.
While Fournier maintained the lead the entire round, the size of his lead fluctuated a bit.  At one point, he held a four-shot lead and at another it was down to just one shot.  His front nine consisted of eight pars and one bogey, which came on the 6th when he three-putted the challenging green.
Fournier comments, “I made a few bogeys on the back side but one pivotal hole was the 11th hole and that was one there, you catch the field.”  He made an impressive birdie on the dogleg, uphill par-4 where some other players struggled to make just a par.  That had to give him some confidence for the remaining holes of the back nine.  While he did bogey the 13th and 14th holes, he made some nice par saves, including one on 15 after he just missed the green with his tee shot.
On the back nine, it became evident that Mike Blair and Danny Arvanitis were within reach of Fournier but were slowly running out of holes to catch him.  Arvanitis ended up firing the low round for the day with two-under par, 68 to finish the tournament at three-over par.  Blair, who got himself to within one shot, ended up making bogey on both 17 and 18 to finish the tournament at four-over par.
With Blair’s two bogeys on the closing holes and Arvanitis in at three-over par, Fournier could safely win the tournament with a bogey on the 18th.  Before addressing his par putt on the final hole, he consulted the leaderboard to see his actual position.  Knowing he could two putt his way to victory, he drained his par putt for the win.
Knowing the strength of the field that was behind him, Fournier says, “I just had the mindset of putting the ball in the fairway.  I was very comfortable with my irons.  On the greens, the pins were placed in a little more difficult places, so the confidence on the green was a little bit less than yesterday.”
He stuck to his game plan and played steady, consistent golf the entire time.  With this being his first NHGA victory, Fournier states, “It feels good.  I’ve been playing with the NHGA for a lot of years, so it feels nice to win.”
The NHGA would like to thank the entire staff at Cochecho Country Club for their hospitality and generosity through this championship.
