Windham, NH – With the opening round of the Senior and Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship in the books, Windham Country Club proved to be a tough challenge for the field, but two players stood out in their divisions.  Ryan Kohler (Hooper GC) earned the top seed in the Mid-Amateur division while Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC) grabbed the number one seed among the Senior division.
As the only golfer with an under-par round, Ryan Kohler fired a one under par 71 to take the number one seed by five strokes.  Kohler, having not seen or played Windham Country Club before, began his day with a bogey on the opening hole but added a birdie to his front nine with seven pars to make the turn at even par.  Though is back nine was full of bogeys and birdies, the highlight of his round came when he made an eagle on the par-5, 15th hole.  Kohler will square off with Jimmy Lyndes (Portsmouth CC) in the first round of match play to begin Tuesday.
Following in behind Kohler, Harvin Groft (The Oaks GL), David Sochanek (Windham CC), and Aaron Loring (Rochester CC) round out of the top four seeds for the Mid-Amateur division of the championship.  The Mid-Amateur Division Championship Flight consists of the top 16 golfers from the opening round of stroke play qualifying.
Defending Senior Match Play Champion, Craig Steckowych found himself in a comfortable position after round one with a three over par, 73.  He earned the top seed by three strokes, followed by Mike Blair (Bretwood GC), and Bob Landry (Loudon CC).  Despite a double bogey and bogey in his first four holes of the day, he closed out his front nine with two birdies, making the turn at just one over par.  His back nine consisted of seven pars and just two bogeys to complete his 73.  Steckowych will face Peter Stopera (Nashua CC) in the first round of matches.
The Mid-Amateur and Senior Match Play Championships is in its fourth year on the NHGA championship schedule.  Competitors ages 25 and over compete in the Mid-Amateur division and competitors 55 and over compete in the Senior division.  All competitors play 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine their seed and flight for the match play rounds beginning Tuesday.  The top 16 players from each division are placed into the Championship Flight.
