New Champion To Be Crowned: DeVito & Hollander to Face Off in Final Match

July 12th, 2019

Greenland, NH – The two finalists set to square off in the final match of the 116th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi Nashua have been narrowed down following a day including the Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches.  Jake Hollander (The Shattuck GC) and John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) have earned their way into the final match with strong, consistent golf all week.
Hollander’s road to the final was not all that easy as four out of the five matches he has played so far reached the 18th hole at Portsmouth Country Club, with one going 20 holes.  In the Quarterfinals he went up against Portsmouth CC President, Nick Kalil who knows the golf course well and has been playing some exceptional golf.
“Nick gave me a run for my money early on”, stated Hollander.  Kalil was 2 up on Hollander through 8 holes, but come the back nine, Hollander was able to turn things around winning 11, 13 and 15 to get himself to 1 up over Kalil.  From there, he held onto the 1 up lead to advance to the Semifinals.
Having to go up against Sam Barton (Kingswood GC), Hollander knew it wouldn’t be a walk in the park.  The two traded holes for much of the front nine, but Hollander capture a 1 up lead on the 8th and didn’t let it slip away, getting himself to 2 up after 11 holes.  Barton, needing to win the hole to extend the match further, drained a lengthy birdie putt on 17that went unanswered by Hollander, so the two headed to 18. Fortunately for Hollander, Barton wasn’t able to capitalize on his momentum, so Hollander took the win at 1 up.
Hollander comments, “It was really back and forth the entire way.  The birdie he made on 17 gave me a bit of a scare but having that cushion coming to 18 really made a difference.”
On DeVito’s side of the bracket, he faced Andrew Purse (Bald Peak Colony Club) in the Quarterfinal round, taking him down 3 & 2.  He moved on to go up against a 16-year old who has turned some heads in this year’s State Amateur.  Mathew Gover (Atkinson Resort & CC) took all of his matches, excluding his match with DeVito, to extra holes and came out with the win each time.  Gover even entered match play as the 41 seed, causing upsets along the way to the Semifinals.
DeVito and Gover went back and forth many times on the front nine, though DeVito never let Gover get a hold of the lead.  Following the 8th hole, DeVito got to 1 up over Gover which held until the 14th hole when DeVito went 2 up and ultimately won the match on the 17th hole, 2 & 1.
With the final match on the horizon, Hollander knows the type of player he is up against.  He says,
“John is playing good.  I played with him two years ago at Bretwood in the Round of 64 and he beat me pretty easily, so he’s a great player.  Starting a tournament bogey free, one eagle and 17 pars, he’s not making mistakes.”
John DeVito is a two-time New Hampshire Golf Association champion, having won the Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship in 2017 and 2018 which could work to his advantage.  Meanwhile, Jake Hollander is a college golfer at the University of Redlands, which advanced to the Men’s NCAA DIII finals this past season.  Both golfers have been playing strong all week which will provide an exciting final match.
The 36-hole Final Match will begin at 7:30AM.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
