Paradis in Familiar Position at Players Invitational

June 1st, 2019

Newbury, NH –  Matt Paradis (Concord CC) came out firing on all cylinders in the first round of the Players Invitational where he made eight birdies and two bogeys to shoot 66 (-6) at Baker Hill Golf Club.  Paradis, a two-time champion of the Players Invitational, currently leads the Regular Division of the championship by five strokes.

In his first NHGA event of the season, Paradis began the round with a birdie on the opening hole.  On the front nine, he added three more birdies and just one bogey when he lost his tee shot on the 8th hole.  Even having to re-tee on 8, he managed a bogey when most would settle for double bogey in that situation.

Heading to the back nine, he again made four birdies and had his second bogey of the round on the par-3, 14th hole where he put his tee shot in the left bunker and couldn’t get up and down.   With each bogey he made, he followed it up with a birdie.  The last time Paradis capture the Players Invitational title, he shot 66 in the first round – he is looking to get his third title this weekend.

Behind Paradis is Pat Pelletier (Carter CC) who shot a respectable 1-under par, 71.  Pelletier had five birdies himself in the round, but four bogeys brought him closer to even than he would like.  Despite the bogeys he made, he had three birdies in his last four holes to give himself some positive momentum heading to the final round where he, and the rest of the field, will be chasing down Paradis.  Pelletier and Paradis will be paired up with each other, joined by Jim Cilley (Canterbury Woods CC) in the final round – Paradis and Pelletier faced off with each other in the final match of the 2018 New Hampshire Amateur Championship.

In the Senior Division, Andy Hunnewell (Carter CC) had a very strong round with a 3-under, 69.  With an average front nine at 1-over par, Hunnewell turned it around on the back and put up four birdies for a back nine total of 32.  Hunnewell’s 3-under is good enough to be atleast three strokes better than the remainder of the Senior Division.  The next closest competitor is Baker Hill GC member, Jim Jankowski who shot even par, 72 on his home course.

The Players Invitational is a two-day, 36-hole championship featuring the top players from the NHGA Thomas J. Leonard Jr. Player of the Year point list from 2018.  Held at Baker Hill Golf Club, the Regular Division golfers play from 7,000 yards, while the Senior Division play it around 6,300 yards.  The final round of the tournament will begin at 7:30AM on Sunday, June 2.
