Ryan Martel Leads Final 15 to Make It to State Amateur from Loudon Qualifier

June 29th, 2021

Loudon, NH – With another hot day in the forecast, 42 players teed it up at Loudon Country Club to try and earn the last 15 spots in the 118th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Tuckerman’s Restaurant.  Ryan Martel (Ridgewood CC) led the field as he shot a four-over par, 76.  Golfers shooting 81 (+9) or better were the ones to advance to the championship next month.

Martel went on a bit of a rollercoaster ride on his front as he had pars, birdies, bogeys and one double bogey.  He made the turn at four-over par and went on to have a more consistent back nine with one bogey and a birdie on the 18th hole.  Martel looks forward to joining the field at North Conway CC.

Four players finished one shot back of Martel at 77 (+5) including Patrick Casey (Pease GC), Scott Underhill (Canterbury Woods CC), Will Hartigan (Concord CC) and Matt Daly (Laconia CC).  All players equally had their ups and downs out on the course but managed a good enough score to earn a spot into the championship.

Hartigan had not seen or played the course since high school, so trying to remember what the course was like was tough.  He said, “It was nervous wrecking off the tee, but it felt like I was hitting the ball well, so I was just happy to not make any big numbers.”

Throughout the 18 holes, he made 13 pars and five bogeys for his five-over par round of 77.  It is tough to judge what the cut will be at before the round.  Hartigan commented, “I didn’t have a great sense for what the number would be at but once I played a couple holes and the wind was blowing, I felt like it might be a little higher than I originally thought.”

Now with his spot secured in the field at North Conway, he thinks about any adjustments in his game that he feels he will have to make.  He stated, “If I don’t get in trouble with my driver, then I’m usually okay.  So, I have to spend some time on the range with the driver.”

With the conclusion of the Loudon Qualifier for the State Amateur, 15 more players are happy to be moving on to compete against the top amateurs in the state.  This qualifier concluded qualifying for the championship and the 156-player field is officially set.

The 118th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Tuckerman’s Restaurant begins on Monday, July 12th at North Conway Country Club.  36 holes of stroke play qualifying will happen the first two days of the championship to determine the 64 golfers that will move on to the match play rounds that begin on Wednesday, July 14th.
