Senatore and McCaigue Claim Inaugural Junior Team Championship Title

August 1st, 2020

Keene, NH – In the final round of the Inaugural Junior Team Championship held at Keene Country Club, the team of Gunnar Senatore (Amherst CC) and Colin McCaigue (Amherst CC) fought tooth and nail to claim the title with their score of -10, 134.
“Well it all started on hole one. Gunnar made a nice 10-footer for birdie, so that got us started on the right track,” stated McCaigue.
The momentum only grew as the team carded three birdies over the first eight holes, and an eagle on the 9th hole putting them at -5 at the turn.
“I think the difference between today and yesterday was we made a lot of putts today,” said Senatore. “This guy [McCaigue] had a lot of putts that were outside of 50 feet that we actually got to drop in, and that made the round a lot easier.”
That momentum, however, was equally matched by the team of Mat Gover (Atkinson Resort and CC) and Noah Leclair (Nashua CC), who were tied the Senatore/McCaigue after 9 holes at -5.
With a birdie here, and a bogey there, both teams remained tied going into the 18th hole. With the back nine holes being live scored, the teams were able to keep tabs on how the other was playing.
“The only hole it affected us on was 18, and even then we stuck with our original plan that we had yesterday with one person going for it and one person laying up, said Senatore thinking back.
They were able to see that the Gover/Leclair team made a par on 18. The Senatore/McCaigue team knew they needed something to happen in order to avoid a play off. With their original plan in place, the team set themselves up for success with a putt for birdie, which rolled right into the hole to win the title.
Although they were on the same high school team, this is the first event that Senatore and McCaigue have played in as a team, and with a Championship win under their belts, the pair hope to play in more team events in the future.
