Stage is Set: New Hampshire Amateur Champion To Be Crowned at Nashua Country Club

June 30th, 2020

Concord, NH – 156 players are set to tee it up at Nashua Country Club on Monday, July 6th for the start of the 117th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi Nashua.  With qualifying now complete, the Granite State golfers that are competing next week are prepping their golf game in anticipation of the state’s premier amateur golf championship.

This year’s field includes 10 past New Hampshire Amateur champions which combine to claim 22 State Amateur titles since 1977.  John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) will be looking to capture a second-straight victory at Nashua Country Club (NCC) this year to add to the four NHGA titles under his belt.  Bob Mielcarz (Concord CC), Jim Cilley (Canterbury Woods CC) and Phil Pleat (Nashua CC) are also in the field, all three have claimed a State Amateur title at Nashua Country Club.

Phil Pleat, who has won three State Amateur titles himself, has been a member at Nashua Country Club for many years and is happy to be competing on his home course alongside his son, James.

“I’m looking forward to playing on my home course in the State Amateur one last time and not having to travel”, says Pleat.
The New Hampshire Amateur has made its way to his home course three times over the years he has competed, including 1984 at Manchester Country Club and 1997 and 2011 when it was at Nashua Country Club.

Pleat, who records countless rounds at NCC each season, states, “The course is in fantastic shape.  Greg Hollick, our Superintendent and his staff have done a tremendous job preparing for the event. Up until recent rain, it has been playing firm and fast with thick rough.”

Knowing the in’s and out’s of NCC will be to Pleat’s advantage as he faces a talented field of competitors.  He comments, “With the younger players, it will come down to who has the best wedge game, since they all hit it a long way.”

One of those young golfers to keep an eye on during the week is William Huang (The Golf Club of New England) who turned heads by tying the course record with a 63 in his State Amateur qualifying round at Rochester CC.  Huang is committed to playing golf at Stanford University and currently ranks 41st among boys in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA).

The golf course staff has been working hard all season to prepare Nashua Country Club for this championship.  NCC is a 6,400-yard, par-71 Wayne Stiles golf course which opened in 1916.  Since then, they have played host to numerous NHGA championships, including 13 State Amateur Championships prior to 2020.

Pleats says, “The par 3’s are very good holes and down the stretch 18 can be interesting with out of bounds all the way down the left side.”

Nashua Country Club will be a great test for all competitors in the field as they look to capture the 2020 title.

The New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi Nashua is a six-day event beginning with 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine the 64 golfers that will advance to match play.  The Championship concludes with a 36-hole final match to crown the year’s champion.
