Star-Studded Leaderboard After Day One of New Hamphire Amateur

July 8th, 2018

Hanover, NH – It should come as no surprise that Matt Paradis (Concord CC) has found his way back to the top of the leaderboard after the opening round of the 115th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Audi of Nashua.  This time, he has company as Ryan Brown (Manchester CC) fired a similar round of four under par, 67.  With numerous talented players on their heels, the two will look to secure medalist honors following the second round of play.
Paradis found himself in a steady, blemish-free round after making eight pars in his opening eight holes and following that up with a birdie on the par-4, 9th hole.  Making the turn at one under par, he threw in another birdie on the 10th hole and two more on the back nine to finish out his round at four under par, 67.
As someone who has been in this position before and who was co-medalist at the 2017 New Hampshire Amateur, Paradis talks about his mindset for the next round saying, “Hopefully hit it just as good as I did today; I’ve got a number to beat.  I know birdies are out there and hopefully I can play even better.”
On the other hand, Brown had six birdies on the card, but had two bogeys to bring himself back down.  The difference in the two players is Brown has never seen Hanover Country Club before; he fired one of the top rounds of the day without having any knowledge of the course.
Many will say that Hanover CC is a course that you will want to have played before the opening round of the Championship.  Knowing he doesn’t have any knowledge of the golf course going into the first round, Brown states, “I try not to be too aggressive, but I’ve been hitting it well heading into this tournament, so I was confident.”
Also joining Paradis and Brown at the top are Ryan Tombs (Manchester CC) and Pat Pelletier (Carter CC) who each finished at -3 (68) and Brandon Gillis (Souhegan Woods GC) who turned in the low round early in the day with a 69.  Many players sit at even par, including Nate Choukas (Hanover CC), Jim Cilley (Ridgewood CC) and James Pleat (Nashua CC).  Each of those three players have their own level of experience, either with the golf course or advancing far into this six-day long Championship.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Sunday and Monday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Tuesday.  One round of matches will be played Tuesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Wednesday and Thursday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Friday.
