They Seal the Deal: DeVito & Hunnewell Capture Respective Titles at Players Invitational

June 7th, 2020

Newbury, NH – The wind was strong today at Baker Hill Golf Club during the final round of the Players Invitational, but John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) and Andy Hunnewell (Carter CC) sealed the deal on their victories, DeVito winning the Regular Division and Hunnewell capturing his second-straight win in the Senior Division.  DeVito closed out the tournament with a 74 (+2), finishing at one-over par for the tournament.  Hunnewell’s final round 78 (+6) brought him to a total of 153 (+9).

DeVito began the day with five-straight pars, which he later describes as a tough start.  He says, “I had a couple birdie opportunities that got left short.  I wasn’t really putting aggressively.  I just had to kind of grind out the first few holes.”

He only had two bogeys on the card and 16 pars.  His first bogey came on Baker Hill’s 6th hole, the same hole he bogeyed the day before.  After hitting his tee shot left, being completely blocked out from reaching the green, he punched out and was able to make bogey.  His only other bogey came on the 10th hole and from then on, he showed how consistent he can be as a player, making pars the rest of the way in.

“I don’t know what it is about being in a tournament setting but I just start hitting it better and hitting it lower,” comments DeVito after the round.

The ability to hit the ball low today was important as the wind was strong and never let up.  DeVito now adds this championship victory to his 2019 New Hampshire Amateur title and his two Mid-Amateur Match Play titles.

Today’s low round can be credited to Pat Pelletier (Carter CC) who navigated the wind to finish with a 73 and in the Runner-up position of the Regular Division.  Pelletier finished the tournament four shots back of DeVito after having an opening round 76.

In the Senior Division, Andy Hunnewell captured his second-straight Players Invitational title, finishing three shots ahead of Runner-up, Bill Everett (Laconia CC).  Going 75-78 was good enough to win in the challenging weather conditions that both days of competition brought.

Hunnewell states, “Today the wind was really challenging.  It was inconsistent and it felt like it was always into us.  So, it was very difficult to control the ball flight and get close to the pin.”

Having won this tournament in 2019, Baker Hill seems to fit Hunnewell’s game well.  He says, “The fairways are pretty generous, I tend to hit the ball fairly straight, so I tend to keep the ball in play which is always a plus.”

He was able to keep his composure in the closing holes to hold off Everett who was anxiously awaiting the results from Hunnewell’s group.  Everett finished the final round with a 77 and climbed the leaderboard to second place, just beating out Jim Jankowski (Baker Hill GC) who closed his tournament with a 79.

The Players Invitational is a championship that brings together the top amateur golfers from the previous season’s NHGA Thomas J. Leonard Jr. Player of the Year points list and is held at the pristine Baker Hill Golf Club each season.  The New Hampshire Golf Association would like to thank Baker Hill for their generosity throughout this tournament.
