Three Tied at the Top as 14 More Earn Bids to North Conway Next Month

June 25th, 2021

Keene, NH – The South Course at Bretwood Golf Course seemed to be no match for some of the players in the field for the third State Amateur Qualifier of the season.  Three players finished tied at the top of the leaderboard at two-under par, 70, with a total of six players under par in their round.  Players advancing on to the 118th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Tuckerman’s Restaurant from Bretwood are those who shot 75 (+3) or better.
Among the top three competitors from the qualifier was 15-year-old Stephen Ramos who plays out of Atkinson Resort and Country Club.  Ramos has the low front nine out of all competitors, making the turn at three-under par.  He birdied the first two holes and added one more on the 5th without any blemishes to earn that spot at the top thru 9 holes.  Although he had one double bogey on the back nine, he kept his score to one-over par for a 70 (-2).
“I played really good on the front nine, I made some putts”, commented Ramos following his round.  “I hit the driver really good and putting was something that helped me today.”
With a total of five birdies on the card, putting was clearly a strong point for him as he safely secured his spot in the field for the New Hampshire Amateur next month.  Aside from putting, he mentioned how he was able to hit irons off many of the tees and still give himself wedge shots in, which help get the ball close to make those birdie putts.
Ramos will be among the 156 players that will be headed to North Conway Country Club in a couple weeks.  He talked about what he is looking forward to most as he heads up north saying, “I’m just really excited to get on the course, I’ve heard it’s really nice and competing with all the other good players.”
Alongside Ramos at two-under par were Mike Blair and Ryan Scollins.  After getting past a single bogey on the first hole, Blair took full advantage of his local knowledge as he went on to make three birdies on the front nine, turning at two-under par.  Consistency was the name of the game for him as he made nine pars on the back nine to finish his round comfortably at two-under par.
Scollins, a 16-year-old who plays out of Bald Peak Colony Club, also worked his way up the leaderboard, but in opposite fashion as Ramos.  Scollins had a two-over par front nine but battled his way back and went four-under par on the back nine, with five birdies and one bogey, to earn his spot at the top of the leaderboard.
14 players on the number earned their place in the field next month by shooting 75 (+5) or better.  Out of the 14 advancing, four are Bretwood Golf Course members and nine players shot even-par or better in their rounds.  It was an impressive scoring day for those qualifying.
Qualifying continues on Sunday, June 27th as a full field of golfers will head to Beaver Meadow Golf Course for a chance at making it to the New Hampshire Amateur next month.
The 118th New Hampshire Amateur Championship presented by Tuckerman’s Restaurant begins on Monday, July 12th at North Conway Country Club.  36 holes of stroke play qualifying will happen the first two days of the championship to determine the 64 golfers that will move on to the match play rounds that begin on Wednesday, July 14th.
