Top Mid-Amateur Seeds Prevail While Senior Side Saw Upsets in Mid-Amateur & Senior Match Play

June 14th, 2021

Concord, NH – As the Mid-Amateur and Senior Match Play Championship continued, the field took to Beaver Meadow Golf Course for the first round of matches.  Despite a nearly three-hour weather delay in the morning, all matches scheduled for the day concluded with the top seeds on the Mid-Amateur side moving on, while the Senior division of the tournament saw a few upsets with higher seeds advancing to the next round.
Eric Emeneau (Souhegan Woods GC) was among those from the Mid-Amateur Championship flight advancing to the next round.  He defeated Derek Mahoney (Derryfield GC) 2&1, a close match between the two competitors.
“We both hit it pretty well, especially on the front,” commented Emeneau after the match.  “We missed a few putts each and it resulted in us being even at the turn.  On the back, Derek struggled a little bit off the tee and that was probably the difference.”
Emeneau, who has been playing a lot of golf this year, would like to take advantage of some of the positives from his round today, but also work on what doesn’t seem to be working.
He stated, “If I can drive it like I drove it today, all I have to do is straighten out what was making me pull the ball.  I drove it really well, maybe the best of the year and I just kept pulling wedge shots.”
Normally his iron game is the strongest point in his game, but he doesn’t feel he is there yet.  Emeneau said, “It helps that I have been playing more this year.  I really haven’t found my swing too much, especially with the irons and I consider the best part of my game my irons.”
Emeneau joins fellow top seeded competitors on the Mid-Amateur side as they head to Bretwood Golf Course in a few weeks for the next round of matches.  Emeneau will be up against fellow Souhegan Woods member, Richard Dichard.  Other matches in the Mid-Amateuer Championship Flight will be between Phil Moore (Canterbury Woods CC) and Patrick Norden (Beaver Meadow GC Online), Derek Dinwoodie (Farmington CC) and Sean Gildea (Sky Meadow CC), and Alex Gambordella (Windham CC) and Zach Melcher (Hanover CC Online).
The Championship Flight of the Senior Division was a different story as higher seeds came out on top, upsetting lower seeded players.  Tony Fournier (Portsmouth CC) is the #13 seed in the bracket and defeated #4 seed, Andy Hunnewell in their match, 2&1.  Fournier most recently won the Senior Division of the Players Invitational at Baker Hill, where Hunnewell was leading the event but fell a few shots back in the final round, rewarding Fournier for his solid final round score.  Fournier moves on to face Kevin Doherty (Stonebridge CC) in the next round of matches.
Another upset in the bracket came when Steve Thompson (Pease GC Online) defeated Steve Haselton (Newport GC), 4&2 to advance.  After the match, Haselton commented on how well Thompson had been putting throughout the match which ultimately got him the win.  Thompson, the #15 seed, will now go up against a tough competitor, Bob Mielcarz (Concord CC) in their Quarterfinal match at Bretwood GC.
Bill Everett (Laconia CC) also took down a lower seed competitor, defeating Les Barton (Canterbury Woods CC).  Everett won the match 2&1 and will now face Danny Arvanitis (Derryfield CC) in the next round.  Rounding out the matches in the Quarterfinal round will be Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC) facing Mike Blair on Blair’s home course.
The Mid-Amateur and Senior Match Play Championship will continue on July 1st as those advancing will play their match on the South Course at Bretwood GC.
