Two at the Top After First Round of New Hampshire Mid-Amateur

October 1st, 2019

Concord, NH –  With Round 1 of the New Hampshire Mid-Amateur Championship at Concord Country Club complete, two players find themselves at the top of the leaderboard with under-par rounds.  Jim Cilley (Pembroke Pines CC) and Will McLaughlin (Concord CC) are tied with the lead after shooting 68 (-2) on the par-70, 6,400-yard Concord course.  With a strong field following close behind, they will look to stay at the top as they head to the next round.
Jim Cilley has seen success in the New Hampshire Mid-Amateur having won this tournament 11 years ago, the last time it was held at Concord CC.  Not only that, but he has landed himself into the final pairing multiple times.  The last two years, he came up short to James Pleat, but today, he used his experience at Concord CC to his advantage.  With four birdies and just two bogeys, Cilley heads to the second round tied for the lead.
When asked what it takes to win this tournament, being among the top mid-amateur aged golfers in New Hampshire, he sates, “I think to win the tournament, you just have to play solid.  I’m obviously very comfortable here at this golf course, I’ve played it quite a few times.”
“You have to be solid around the golf course, you have to miss it in the right spots, and you have to make putts.  The greens are very, very good.  Especially here, you just have to play solid and if some putts go in, they go in and you can be around even-par, that’s always a good number here”, continues Cilley.
Being paired with James Pleat for the first two rounds gives Cilley a little extra motivation, but he says, “Honestly, I just want to play well.  I haven’t played very well all year.”
He did play well and will look to maintain his position on the leaderboard.  Alongside Cilley is Will McLaughlin who calls Concord Country Club his home course.  McLaughlin carded a steady, consistent round with three birdies and one bogey happening on the par 3, 9th hole.  With one birdie and eight pars on the back nine, he heads to Round 2 with confidence in his game and will look to use his local knowledge to carry his through to the final day.
Defending champion, James Pleat had an up and down day.  To start, he birdied the first hole but through a series of unfortunate shots he ended up with a 10 on the second hole of the course.  Despite being six-over par on the front nine, he had a blemish-free back nine which went on to include on birdie and one eagle to finish his round with a 73, three-over par.
With two rounds yet to play, there is plenty of golf and more opportunities for golfers to move up the leaderboard as the cut to the final day will include 27 golfers.
The Robert H. Elliott New Hampshire Mid-Amateur Championship is a three-day, 54-hole individual stroke play tournament open to male amateur golfers in New Hampshire age 25 and older.  Following 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 27 and ties who will move on to play 18 more holes to determine the champion.
