Watt Wins Her Second NHGA Championship Title With 2&1 Final Match Victory in NHGA Women's Match Play

May 19th, 2021

Dover, NH –  Tara Watt (Derryfield CC) is taking home her second NHGA championship title after defeating Pareena Deva (Sky Meadow CC) 2&1 in the final match of the Championship Flight of the NHGA Women’s Match Play Championship.  The First Flight also concluded as Suzanne Flynn (Pease GC) won her match 8&6 over Michael Culbert (Breakfast Hill GC).
Watt got herself off to a strong start as she drained a lengthy par putt on the first hole and went on to made birdies on 2 and 3 at Cochecho CC to get herself to 3up thru 3 holes of play.  Deva was not going to let her get away that fast as she used her consistency in her game to keep the match within reach.
The two traded and tied multiple holes throughout the round, with Watt gaining the advantage after nine holes, being 3up.  Watt held onto her 3up lead for much of the back nine, but Deva won their 15th hole in the match to get it to Watt at 2up.  Both competitors made key pars along the way, but Deva needed a birdie on the 17th hole to extend the match.  She just missed and Watt took the victory, 2&1.
For all players, a lot of golf had been played throughout the tournament, but that didn’t mean nerves weren’t running high for this final match.  After her win, Watt commented on how she felt coming into the final match saying, “I always get nervous so there was that, but I was just thinking if I make 18 pars today and sneak a birdie or two in there, I think that would be good enough.”
“That was my plan to hit fairways, greens, center of the greens, and try to make that work,” continued Watt.  That game plan paid off well for her and she made the pars where she needed them to hang onto the lead the entire match.
Deva, who was playing in an NHGA championship for her first time, is a solid competitor and consistent golfer.  Watt stated, “She was a great competitor, it was awesome playing with her.  She was super consistent off the tee, so I knew every drive was going to be down the middle.  I just had to take advantage of my length on the longer holes.”
Last season, Watt won the NHWGA Championship along with the NHGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.  She now adds this title along side those and hopes to add more this summer.
Watt commented on how it feels to win again saying, “It’s awesome.  It never gets old.”  She accomplished the goal she set out for, to win the tournament.
In the First Flight, Suzanne Flynn and Michael Culbert squared off.  Both played a solid tournament coming into the final match.  Flynn got off to a hot start and never let up.  She made the turn at 6up over Culbert after draining a birdie putt on the 9th hole.  From there, she kept her momentum going and closed out the match on the 12th hole, 8&6.  Flynn ended up winning all of her matches 8&6 this week, never making it past the 12th hole at Cochecho CC.
The NHGA would like to extend a sincere thank you to the entire staff at Cochecho Country Club for hosting this championship event!
