TILTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE-Brett Wilson’s defense of his New Hampshire Mid-Amateur Championship title did not start how he would have liked. The way he finished was beyond his wildest dreams.

Wilson, playing out of Golf Club of New England in Stratham, bogeyed the par four first ho
le at Lochmere Golf and Country Club. After three pars he bogeyed the par four fifth hole. After two more pars he made his first birdie at the par three eighth hole. A par at the ninth had him at one over par at the turn. Then he caught fire.

Wilson birdied the 10th and 11th holes and after making pars at 12 and 13, he played the next five holes at three under par to shoot a five under par 32 on the par 37 back nine.   His four under-68 total was good for a three shot lead after day one of the three day-54 hole event.

Chris Phillipy out of Canterbury Woods was the early leader after posting a one under-71 before slipping to second place after Wilson turned in his 68. Tied with Phillipy is Dan Arvanitis from Derryfield Country Club.
Craig Steckowych, Sean Lacy and Kurt Wuensc hel were tied at one over while Tim Baines was alone in seventh place at two over. Past champion Josh Chamberlain heads up a group at three over par that includes Bob Landry, David Larivee, Peter Keilty and Howard Cullen.

Wednesday will be moving day as there is a cut to the low 27 and ties after the round and those left standing will compete for the title on Thursday.
