Pleat Crowned Senior Champion at Kingswood

September 8th, 2021

Wolfeboro, NH – Phil Pleat of Nashua CC is the NHGA Senior Champion once again. He defended his title and added a record eight senior title having previously won in 2020, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2011. His 36-hole total of 1-under par 143 was good enough for a 4 shot victory over Craig Steckowych of Portsmouth CC.

Pleat began the day tied with Steckowych and Danny Arvanitis (Derryfield CC) but quickly separated himself as his two closest challengers got off to uncharacteristic slow starts. Steckowych made bogey on the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th, and 9th holes to go out in a disappointing 40. Arvanitis also found trouble early, making bogies at the 1st and 3rd and double bogies on the par-5 2nd and par-4 4thSteckowych steadied the ship on the back nine and made a beautiful eagle on the par-5 11th but by that point in the round, Pleat’s victory was all but assured.

Pleat’s front nine included a single bogey on the 4th matched by a birdie on the par-3 6th hole. From there, his round included 11 pars and a single birdie on the par-5 16th for a round of 1-under 71. His was the only under par round posted during the 36-hole tournament.

“I got away with some bad shots today, but I hung in there.” Pleat said. “I was fortunate that my playing partners, Craig and Danny, who are great players and great guys, weren’t on their A-game today. I got lucky.”

For the 22nd time in his career, Pleat found himself in the NHGA winner’s circle, a tally unmatched in the history of NHGA championships. The victory also comes in the same season that Phil’s son James won his second consecutive State Amateur in mid-July. “To win the same year that he (James) has is extremely special. Both of us have great support from my wife and daughter and you can’t ask for any more than that,” said Pleat.

Steckowych ended the day with a 75 and alone in second place. This is his best finish in the event since he was tied for fourth in 2017 when the championship was held at North Conway CC. Jim Jankowski (Baker Hill GC) shot 2-over par 74 to finish in solo third place and Arvanitis’s 80 dropped him into a tie for fourth with Kevin Doherty (Manchester CC), who also shot 74.

Bill Everett (Laconia CC) finished in sixth place, Bob Kearney (Bretwood GC) and Bob Mielcarz (Concord CC) tied for seventh, David Kane (Derryfield CC) shot 76 to finish alone in ninth place and Tony Fournier (Portsmouth CC) and Mike Blair (Bretwood GC) rounded out the top-10.

This was the first time since 2015 that Kingswood GC has hosted the Senior Championship when Mielcarz took home the title with a one-shot victory over Pleat.
