Final Sixteen Packs a Punch

July 12th, 2017

Keene, NH –  64 players started the day and only 16 will be advancing on to the Round of 16 at the 114th State Amateur Championship presented by Audi of Nashua.  Familiar names continue to move on in match play at Bretwood Golf Course with strong showings in each match in today’s rounds.
Matt Paradis (Concord CC), the tournament’s number one seed, won each of his matches defeating Nate Gardner 5 & 4 in the Round of 64 and Dave Larrivee 2 & 1 in the Round of 32.  In his match with Larrivee, it was a battle as Larrivee was on top of his game, playing the round at three under par, but Paradis still outlasted him.
Jim Cilley also won both of his matches defeating Slyvain Foster in the morning at 1 UP.  Sylvain took him all the way to 18, which was made drivable at just 275 yards today.  Neither player was able to hit the green but Cilley made a great up and down to win the match.  In the afternoon, Cilley defeated home course player, Cam Salo 2 & 1.

In the Round of 16, Cilley will face Ryan Tombs who has played strong golf this week.  Cilley provided a few thoughts heading into that match saying, “I just have to play my game, that’s all I can do.  He’s not going to make many mistakes, which means I can’t make many mistakes.”
Other notable players advancing are Phil Pleat, Craig Steckowych, Mike Martel and Connor Greenleaf.  Each of these players have won the State Amateur Championship atleast on time and are using their experience to their advantage.  A few exciting matches finished at the end of the day; Brett Wilson ended up defeating Tommy Ethier I UP, while Jamie Ferullo took 21 holes to defeat John Clancy.  Ferullo birdied both 17 and 18 to extend the match to extra holes.
Thursday Round of 16 Matches begins Thursday morning at 10AM.
The New Hampshire Amateur Championship is a six-day event, beginning with 36-holes of stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday to determine the 64 players who will be advancing to the match play rounds beginning on Wednesday.  One round of matches will be played Wednesday, two rounds of matches will be played both Thursday and Friday, and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday.
