Desjardins Drives to Top of Leaderboard with Under Par Score in First Round of NH Boys Junior

August 3rd, 2020

Grantham, NH – On a challenging golf course with higher winds, Evan Desjardins (Atkinson Resort & CC) fired the only under-par round of the day to lead the New Hampshire Boys Junior Championship at Eastman Golf Links.  Desjardins shot one-under par, 70 to lead the field by four strokes in the opening round of the 54-hole competition.  With a strong field of competitors, he will look to capitalize on the lead he gained after the first day.

Desjardins started the day making consistent pars, but bogeyed the 5th and 6th holes of Eastman GL to quickly get himself to two-over par.  His round took a turn for the better when he stuck his second shot close on the 9th hole to make birdie.

He commented after the round saying, “I started off mediocre at best.  I made a couple bogeys on the 5th and the 6th holes, so I was two-over.  I couldn’t really get a putt to fall and that continued throughout the day.”

“But then I got to the 9th and hit one into about four or five feet, so I made birdie there and that gave me a little bit of confidence going into the back,” continued Desjardins.

On the back side, he was able to birdie the picturesque 12th hole to bring his round back to even-par.  Despite his bogey on the 14th hole, he got himself on the green in two shots on the 457-yard, par-5 16th hole and drained his eagle putt to get himself to one-under and then parred his way in.

“For me, the hardest part was getting used to the greens,” stated Desjardins.  “I had a little bit of trouble reading them so that was definitely difficult.  And then the wind, of course, made it pretty difficult.”

With 36 holes left to play and inclement weather heading north, Desjardins looks to hang on to the lead he has already established.  He says, “Going into the next two days, it looks like it might be some difficult weather so I’m going to try and stay focused, put my head down and just grind it out.”

With players like Mat Gover (Atkinson Resort & CC), Evans Rollins (Laconia CC) and Elliott Wallace (Manchester CC) sitting four shots behind him at three-over par, 74, Desjardins will need to continue to play his own game and hope more putts drop in the following rounds.

Defending champion and another Atkinson Resort & CC member, Jack Pepin, finished his round at seven-over, 78.  He will look to go low in the next two rounds to work his way up the leaderboard to get into a position to chase down the leaders.

The New Hampshire Boys Junior Championship is a three-day, 54-hole individual stroke play event.  Due to the incoming weather, the field is being Flighted based on their first-round score, with the top 16 golfers going into the Championship flight.  The champion will be crowned on Wednesday, August 5th.
