Gillis & Brown Four Ball Champs Once Again

June 10th, 2021

Campton, NH – Brandon Gillis (Sky Meadow CC) and Jack Brown (Nashua CC) are NHGA Four Ball Champions, outlasting a field of 41 teams over 36-holes at Owl’s Nest GC in Campton. This is the second time that Gillis and Brown have won the championship with their first win coming in 2018 when the event was held at Canterbury Woods CC and Owl’s Nest GC. Their 36-hole total of 13-under par was good enough for a one-shot victory over Mark Stevens (Concord CC) and Doug Champagne (Concord CC).
For the first time, the championship was held on a single day with teams going out for a morning shotgun and quickly turning around before starting the final round with an early afternoon shotgun start. Brown and Gillis found themselves two shots back after round one. Stevens and Champagne fired a scorching 8-under par round of 64. Stevens made eight birdies on his own ball and it appeared that the Concord CC members were in complete control.
However, a slow start in round two ultimately doomed Stevens and Champagne. They didn’t make their first birdie of the second round until the par-4 sixth hole and they only recorded three more birdies the rest of the way for a round two score of 4-under 68 and a 36-hole total of 12-under par.
Playing in the group ahead, Gillis and Brown quickly went to work in the final round. Brown birdied number one, Gillis birdied the par-5 fourth hole, and Brown ended their opening nine holes with birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. A pedestrian back nine quickly turned around when Gillis eagled the par-5 seventeenth hole which ultimately handed them the title.
Gillis and Brown are no strangers to the top of the leaderboard in this event. They finished runner-up last year and third in 2019.  The leaderboard was littered with past champions, including Bryce Zimmerman, (who won with William Huang in 2020) who finished fourth with partner Mat Gover, Jim Cilley and Mike Mahan (2010 champions) finished in solo third, Peter Keilty and Kevin Strong (2016 champions) finished in sixth place, and Josh Chamberlain and Ryan Kohler (2013 champions) finished alone in seventh place.
Despite a very strong field, Gillis and Brown made just nine total bogies over 36-holes to outlast the field. Birdies were abundant as the field made a total of 268 birdies and 8 eagles on the day.
