Portsmouth, NH –  After 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine seeds and flights for the Mid-Amateur and Senior Match Play Championships at Pease Golf Course, Harvin Groft (The Oaks GL) and Peter Beaulieu (Profile Seniors) grab the top seed in their respective divisions.
The Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship field is made up of strong competitors from around the Granite State.  Groft took the early lead, teeing off in the first starting time, making the turn at two under par and finishing up the tough back nine at even par for a total of 69 (-2).  Also playing his front nine at two under par was Jamie Ferullo (Rochester CC) who then finished his round at a total one under par, 70.  Groft will square off against Jon Driscoll (Amherst CC) in the Round of 16.
On the Senior side of the Championship, Beaulieu played each nine at a steady one over par each to end his round with a total 73 (+2) which was good enough to earn the top seed by one stroke.  Scott Peters (Hanover CC) had a strong opening nine, turning at one under par, but returned four bogeys in his closing four holes to finish with a 74 (+3).  Beaulieu will move on to face Bo Harris (Concord CC) in the Round of 16 for the Senior Match Play Championship.
Past Mid-Amateur Match Play Champion, John DeVito (Passaconaway CC) finished his round at just three over par, 74 and earned the 4th seeds in the Mid-Amateur Championship flight.  He will face Justin Benson (Amherst CC) in the Round of 16.  Bill Everett (Laconia CC), 2017 Senior Match Play Champion, totaled a six over, 77 with a tough stretch in the middle of the back nine.  Everett will square off with Stuart Frye (Wentworth by the Sea CC) in Tuesday’s opening round of matches.
On a beautiful spring day, Pease Golf Course played at around 6,200 yards with winds beginning to pick up as the day went along.  Course conditions were great; the greens were rolling quick, providing a tough test for the top mid-amateur and senior golfers from around New Hampshire.
The Mid-Amateur and Senior Match Play Championships mirror the format of the NHGA Junior Championship.  Competitors ages 25 and over compete in the Mid-Amateur division and competitors 55 and over compete in the Senior division.  All competitors play 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine their seed and flight for the match play rounds beginning Tuesday.  The top 16 players from each division are placed into the Championship Flight.
