Oldest & Youngest Set to Squre off: Barton vs Adams Final Match of Boys Junior Championship

August 7th, 2018

Hudson, NH – With another hot day of the Boys Junior Championship presented by Junior Golf Hub in the books, the final match of the Championship flight is set.  Sam Barton (Kingswood GC) and Brian Adams (Breakfast Hill GC) are set to square in the final match.
In the Quarterfinals of the Championship flight, Barton faced CJ Ladue (Manchester CC), a tough competitor who brought it down to the 17th hole of Green Meadow’s Jungle Course.  This match was a rematch from last year’s Junior Championship where Ladue defeated Barton 1up.  The 2018 result of this match was a little different as Barton defeated Ladue 2 & 1.
Heading into the Semifinal match of the tournament, Barton went up against Nick Grimbilas (Portsmouth CC) who was fresh off a victory over TJ Gillis (Souhegan Woods GC) after having a late surge to win three-straight holes and ultimately win the match.  Barton took a quick 2up lead over Grimbilas thru 3 holes of play but Grimbilas brought it back to Barton at 1up for much of the front nine.  A loss of the 10th gave Barton the 2up lead back and it never slipped.  Grimbilas had a chance to win one on the 13th after draining a lengthy birdie putt but Barton poured one in on top of that to have the hole.  Barton defeated Grimbilas on the 16th hole, winning 3 & 2.
Comparing yesterday’s rounds to today, Barton says, “It was definitely more of a grind than yesterday.  The course was a little bit harder and a little longer.  I was just hitting a lot of close wedge shots, had a lot of pretty close birdies putts that made it so I didn’t give him anything.”
Brian Adams, one of the youngest competitors in the field at the age of 13, had to break through Bryce Zimmerman (Nashua CC), the #2 seed in the bracket to get to where he is.  Adams gained a 1up lead on Zimmerman after the first three holes of play and never let his lead go.  At the turn he was 3up and held that all the way through the back nine.  He won the 16th hole to close out the match at 4 & 2.  With that behind him he went on to face Jack Pepin (Atkinson Resort & CC) in the Semifinal round.  With both heat and exhausting setting in, both players carded a few bogeys but in the end, it was the player that able to make the lead amount of mistakes that prevailed.  Adams defeated Pepin 4 & 3 in their match to advance on to the final match against Sam Barton.
Reflecting back on his semifinal match, Adams states, “I started off great; the front nine I was really solid but then the heat started getting to me and eventually I just kept making pars and that was enough to wear him out.”
Being the youngest competitor in the Championship bracket and five years young that his final match opponent, Adams feels good about.  He says, “It feels nice knowing I’m the youngest person in.  It has given me some confidence, believe it or not.”  Adams has been through The First Tee of New Hampshire program and has emphasized that confidence is his favorite Core Value from The First Tee Core Values.
The First Flight and Second Flight bracket final matches concluded with Ben Dougherty (North Conway CC) winning the First Flight and Matthew Macdougall (Hoodkroft CC) winning the Second Flight finals.  Each final match needed extra holes to determine the winner, both using 20 holes to decide the match.
The 2018 Boys State Junior Championship sponsored by Junior Golf Hub, being held at Green Meadow Golf Club, brings together the top junior players from around the State to compete in 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to advance to the match play round in their respective flights.
