Peters Perseveres and Claims Inaugural Women's Mid-Amateur Title

August 30th, 2018

Wolfeboro, NH – When the final round of the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship began at Kingswood Golf Club, there were numerous players who could had a shot at taking the title.  Amy Peters (Hanover CC) was the one who came out on top in the end after shooting 79 (+7), two strokes better than her opening round.  Round 1 leader, Kim Lazenby (Cochecho CC) finished in the runner-up position with a second round 83 (+9).
Peters, who had a more challenging front nine, was able to keep all the trouble contained to the front, aside for the birdie she carded on the par-3, 5th hole.  Heading to the back side, she made another birdie on the par-3, 13th hole and only ran into trouble one time, on the 14th hole where she made double bogey.  Aside from that, she made seven pars on the back to keep herself to +1, finishing at +7 for the round.
Thinking back to her round, Peters says, “I don’t remember a ton about the golf that I played other than I just was going out and trying to hit the ball and keep it in play because it’s a tight course.  So, I just wanted to get off the tee and kind of keep it in the fairway.”
“I think I putted pretty well today.  I made a couple of long putts, which helped a couple of birdies”, continues Peters.
Following in behind Peters was Kim Lazenby who was the leader of the tournament heading into the final round.  With a few tough holes on the front nine leading to an 8-over par front nine score, Lazenby ran out of holes to try and bounce back to catch back up with Peters.  Lazenby finished two strokes behind Peters at a tournament total of 162.
With a solid showing in Round 2, Betsy Knights (Hanover CC) made a charge up the leaderboard in the hopes of catching Lazenby and Peters.  While Knights was not able to capitalize on any birdie opportunities, she was able to successfully avoid any scores above bogey which was key to her finishing the day with an 80 (+8).  Knights ultimately finished in third place, just three shots behind Peters and one shot behind Lazenby.
The New Hampshire Golf Association is thrilled to be able to host the first-ever Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, open to all female golfers over the age of 25 who have an active New Hampshire handicap.  The hope is to grow the event and continue to attract the top female golfers within the State and provide more championship playing opportunities.
