Stone Starts NHGA Season With A Bang

April 29th, 2019

Canterbury, NH – Keith Stone (The Overlook GC) won the first event of the 2019 NHGA tournament season by shooting a one-over par round of 73 at a blustery and cold Canterbury Woods CC. The win was the first of Stone’s NHGA playing career. Jim Cardoso of Concord CC and Mike Blair of Bretwood GC tied for second with rounds of 78 (+6). That total also gave Blair low-senior honors where he bested Peter Beaulieu (81) and Greg Smith (83).

The day started clear and very cold as a frost delay pushed tee times back 30 minutes. Once on course, players were forced to deal not only with the biting cold temperatures but a strong northwesterly wind that gusted at times close to 20mph. For Stone however, it was just another day on the golf course.

He fired an even par front nine as bogies at the 4th, 7th, and 8th were matched by birdies at numbers five, six, and nine. Two pars started his back nine and he gave another one back at the tricky 12th hole. From there, Stone was in complete control. He made birdies on his next four consecutive holes to put the event away for good. Despite a bogey at the 17th and a triple bogey on the always difficult 18th, Stone still earned his first NHGA win going away with a five-shot victory over Blair and Cardoso.

Scott Rolph (Pease GC) fired an 8-over par 80 and the aforementioned Beaulieu (Profile Seniors) shot 9-over to round out the top-5.

The NHGA Stroke Play Series was created in 2018 and is open to players from across the state who hold a handicap index of 12.0 or lower. These 18-hole events are held throughout the state and allow players a taste of competition while also competing for vital Thomas J. Player of the Year points as well as Tri-State team points. Additional Stroke Play Series events will be held this year at Nippo Lake GC (May 20th), Exeter CC (July 1st), Intervale CC (August 27th), and Laconia CC (October 28th).
