Hudson, NH – With the only under-par score of the stroke play qualifying round at the 2018 Boys Junior Championship presented by Junior Golf Hub, Sam Barton (Kingswood GC) has earned the top seed of the Championship.  Barton fired a 2-under 68 to safely secure the top spot in the Championship flight bracket.
Beginning his day on the 10th hole of Green Meadow Golf Club’s Prairie course, Barton had a very clean opening nine with one birdie and zero bogeys to make the turn at 1-under par.  After the turn, he got himself to 3-under but made bogey on the Prairie’s 4th hole to drop back to 2-under.   Back on the birdie trail, Barton got himself to 4-under but bogeyed his closing two holes to finish with a 68, 2-under par.
Earning the 16th seed in the Championship flight after a 3 for 1 spot playoff following the completion of 18 holes of play, Gunnar Senatore (Amherst CC) took on Sam Barton in the first round of match play.  With Barton failing to make any bogeys in the match, Senatore ultimately lost the match on the 13th hole, losing 7 & 5.  Barton will move on to face CJ Ladue (Manchester CC) in the Quarterfinal round of play.
Following play, Barton commented on his game throughout the day saying, “I played pretty consistently.  I didn’t make a single bogey in my match which really helps when you don’t give him any holes.  I just made some birdies and didn’t let him get back in the match.”
With 18 holes of stroke play down and switching over to match play, it tends to be a different mindset.  Barton states, “My mindset was to just play my game, I knew I could play well here.  I knew I made a couple stupid mistakes that could easily be fixed so just as long as I don’t give him anything, I’d be fine.”
Bryce Zimmerman (Nashua CC), who recently won the Red Ryan tournament at Derryfield CC, had a solid showing in the opening day as well with a stroke play qualifying score of 72, 2-over par.  Zimmerman took on Anthony Andronaco (The Shattuck GC) in the first round of match play; being 6up at the turn, he gave up one but finally won the match on their 13th hole of play, winning 6 & 5.  In the Quarterfinal round, Zimmerman will face Brian Adams (Breakfast Hill GC).
The juniors took on Green Meadow Golf Club’s Prairie course for the first day of competition which plays to about 6,100 yards.  For the remainder of match play, competitors will be playing on the Jungle course which many find to be a more challenging 18 holes.  Despite the high temperatures, the conditions were great and provided a good test of golf for the juniors.
The 2018 Boys State Junior Championship sponsored by Junior Golf Hub, being held at Green Meadow Golf Club, brings together the top junior players from around the State to compete in 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to advance to the match play round in their respective flights.
