Top Seeds Advance at Green Meadow as Match Play Championship Continues

September 22nd, 2020

Hudson, NH – As the second day of the Senior & Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship comes to a close, the top seed in each division advance on to the Semifinal round.  Harvin Groft (The Oaks GL) defeated Paul Torri and Rob Zimmerman on his route to the Semifinal round.  Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC) took down Bill Sheridan and Bill Krueger to earn his spot in the Semifinals.

The day started with another frost delay but Groft and Torri kicked things off in the first match of the day.  It was a close match the entire round, coming down to the 18th hole where Groft ended up winning the match 1up to advance.  He went on to face Rob Zimmerman (Nashua CC) who recently came off a Round of 16 win against Mike Walker, defeating him 4&2.  Groft and Zimmerman were tied in the match thru their first nine holes, but Groft began to get a lead going on the back side.  He ultimately defeated him 3&2 to move on to face Matt Burroughs (Derryfield CC) in the Semifinals.

Jeff Monahan finds himself in the Semifinal round of the tournament after defeating both of his opponents, including taking down the #2 seed, Peter Keilty.  As the #7 seed, Monahan worked his way to the Semifinals one step at a time, first beating John Duarte 3&1.  From there, he went on to face Peter Keilty who has been playing some great golf all week to earn his second seed.

While Monahan had a 2up lead over Keilty after 9 holes, he did let Keilty get back into it a little bit.  The matched ended up needing all 18 holes with Monahan winning it 1up on the 18th hole.

“I just hit the ball pretty good and made a bunch of putts,” commented Monahan following his Quarterfinal victory.  “Peter played really good; we had a great match.  And I had a birdie on the last hole to win it.”

When it comes to a certain part of his game that works best for him, Monahan states, “My short game is really good.  I don’t hit it as far as most of the guys out here, I’m a little bit older than most of them but I hit it straight and make a few putts every now and then.”

His short game has been working well but another aspect helping him out this week is that Green Meadow is his home club.  He said, “I grew up playing this golf course, so I know it pretty well.”

“I’ve played this place a thousand times and I love it, its just a fantastic golf course,” continued Monahan.  He’ll look to take advantage of his local knowledge as he faces Pat Pelletier (Carter CC) in the Semifinals.

In the Senior Division, top seeded Craig Steckowych landed himself a Semifinal spot by defeating Bill Sheridan (Nashua CC) 3&1 in the Round of 16 and then took on Bill Krueger (Concord CC) in the Quarterfinals.  Steckowych led the Quarterfinal match the entire way, making the turn in a 4up position.  He ultimately closed out the victory on the 13th hole.  Steckowych moves on to a face a strong competitor in the Semifinals, Bob Kearney (Bretwood GC).

Mike Blair (Bretwood GC) had himself a great day on the golf course as he took down the #2 seed, Larry Nuttall (Candia Woods GL).  Blair first defeated Allen Pattee in the Round of 16 in what a close match for much of the way.  The two went to 18 holes where Blair defeated Pattee 1up to then face Nuttall in the Quarterfinals.  With a strong showing in the Quarterfinal round, Blair beat Nuttall 4&3 to now go up against Bill Everett (Laconia CC) in the Semifinals.

The First Flight of the Senior division, the top two seeds were taken down leaving the #3 and #4 seeds to face eachother in the final match of their flight.  Peter Stopera (Nashua CC) and David Dunbar (Windham CC) will square off in the final match to determine the winner of their flight.
